Congratulations on your new puppy!
Your newest family member comes with a lot of love, joy, fun…….and LOTS of hard work.
With a Family Dog Mediator in your corner, you will be set up for success from the very beginning!
The cuteness
….oh, the cuteness!
When we go looking for a new puppy, we often turn to the internet. So many options, Craigslist, PuppySpot, Facebook….or of course the local shelter.
We fall in love instantly with those cute faces. Everybody loves puppies…how could you not…..they wobble, they fall over, they cuddle, their sweet smell….it’s cuteness overload!!
The pet industry is booming more than ever. Most dog trainers, all with different approaches and methods, offer puppy training - either private or classes.
So why Family Dog Mediation? What can I teach you that is different from most trainers?
The problem with us humans falling in love with the cute puppy faces is that we think with the heart, not the mind. We fall in love with an image or illusion and don’t think it through to the end - whether the breed, the needs, the size will fit our lifestyle.
In the moment, we may make a decision on which breed to get, based on what our kids want, or that we have always wanted a Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, or Pit Bull from the shelter, for example. The oxytocin fills us completely and clouds our minds and so we often act on impulse when it comes to puppies.
We run into trouble when the puppy grows and you realize that perhaps the breed, the needs, the size does not fit well with your lifestyle….and so behavior problems begin…
As a Licensed Family Dog Mediator®, I have the knowledge, the skills, the approach, the special training and education, that goes beyond dog training or behavior consulting, to help you & your family understand WHO your puppy really is (so much MORE than a pet!) and what kind of behaviors are likely to appear as your puppy grows.
With this understanding, you will be better equipped to handle and understand certain behavior patterns and you will know HOW to set your environment up for success for your puppy - for life.
What you get from me and my puppy programs below, go far BEYOND training.
Developmental Periods
Puppies go through different developmental stages that all affect their behavior at any given moment. You may have heard how important it is to start training your puppy early, ideally around 8 weeks old. You may also have heard how important it is to socialize your puppy while he or she is young.
It is generally agreed that the socialization window is short and runs from around 7/8 weeks - 15/16 weeks.
Because each period affects behavior differently and new behaviors emerge at these different stages, my programs below each focus on these critical periods. So, you will find a program on:
The Socialization period (8wks - 5 months)
The Adolescent period (6 -14 months +/-)
Your puppy’s learning ability changes throughout these periods as the brain loses old connections, forming new ones. Sleep is as important to a puppy as to a human baby, to help the brain and bone structure/density to develop. Your puppy needs to sleep somewhere between 16-20 hours a day while growing.
What about training?
In The Dog Talker’s Puppy Programs, we focus both on teaching your puppy important foundation skills but as a Family Dog Mediator®, I focus even more on helping you & your family learn how to guide your puppy through life with ‘Hacks’ used ONLY in Family Dog Mediation®. ‘Hacks’ are science based techniques, deeply rooted in *Applied Ethology and focus on how puppies/dogs naturally learn & adapt to and from their environment.
It is important to understand that puppies/dogs learn 24/7 - not just when we are training them. This is why, as Family Dog Mediators, we work from a science model called L.E.G.S.® which is an acronym for Learning - Environment - Genetics - Self because all of the 4 L.E.G.S.® affect a puppy/s behavior at all times.
L.E.G.S.® Assessment (included in programs)
All programs start with a L.E.G.S.® Assessment (1.5 hrs Initial Consultation on ZOOM - INCLUDED in ALL programs)- where we help you get a better understanding of WHO your puppy really is, WHY he does what he does, and what behaviors are likely to appear at different stages.
We then work with your puppy’s C.O.M.P.A.S.S. (see Canine COMPASS Coaching), which is a framework I have developed to ensure you meet ALL of your puppy’s breed specific needs. This framework or roadmap, if you will, ultimately helps you learn HOW to navigate life successfully with your pup - and as she grows into an adult dog.
